24th November 2007, Punta Arenas, Chile. Survivors from the shipwrecked Antarctic vessel M/S Explorer arrive at Punta Arenas by military aircraft. 154 tourists and crew had spent the night on King George Island after their ship struck an iceberg and sank approximately 120km (75 miles) north of the Antarctic Peninsula. After several hours bobbing in small lifeboats surrounded by floating sheets of ice, they were plucked to safety by the Norwegian cruise ship, the Nordnorge. The "Spirit of Shackleton" 19-day cruise through the Drake Passage, cost from around $8,000 (£3,900) per cabin. Pictured is Jan Heikel and fiance Mette Larsen from Denmark. Jan had intended to propose to Mette the next day but when the ship started to sink he grabbed the ring and proposed of the lifeboat. She said yes..PHOTO © JOHN CHAPPLE / REBEL IMAGES.john@chapple.biz www.chapple.biz
